‘Everybody try laughing’: Studio Ghibli Films to Return to Cinemas

In a month-long nationwide showcase, Celebrate Studio Ghibli will bring the famous Japanese animation studio’s 22 films back to cinemas, alongside rarely-seen short films and documentaries.

The films of Studio Ghibli, including classics such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso and My Neighbour Totoro, will screen in cinemas across the country and New Zealand from August 24 until September 20. In Adelaide, the films will screen at GU Filmhouses in Glenelg and Hindley Street, Event Cinemas Marion and Hoyts Cinema Tea Tree Plaza.

A representative for Madman Entertainment tells The Adelaide Review that more cinema complexes may come aboard Celebrate Studio Ghibli in coming weeks, and recommends that Ghibli fans check celebratestudioghibli.com.au for session times and participating cinemas in the lead up to the event.

Renowned for their touching subject matter and inventive, often surreal stories, the films of Studio Ghibli have reached global fame and cult status as some of the greatest animation ever produced. Most Studio Ghibli films were written and directed by the acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki, but the oeuvre also includes contributions from the likes of Isao Takahata, Keiko Niwa, and Hayao’s son Gorō Miyazaki, among others.

Further inclusions in the lineup of famous Ghibli films are the documentaries The Kingdom Of Dreams And Madness, and Isao Takahata And His Tale Of The Princess Kaguya, which showcase the inner workings of the influential studio, as well as the short film Ghiblies Episode 2 and Chage & Aska music video On Your Mark.
