Pollen 185 is a boutique joint that understands the secret to a good cafe is a successful marriage between quality coffee and quality food. The staff acknowledges me when I arrive, greeting me like I’ve walked into a Japanese restaurant, while the barista is ready to serve behind a La Marzocco coffee machine. The barista chats to me about coffee in between customers before suggesting I try something he roasted himself. He goes under the name ‘The Caffiend’ and today he roasts a single origin bean from Panama. It is full of flavour and has a big impact upon my first sip. The berry notes dominate initially but cocoa and sultana shine at the end For my latte, I choose coffee from a local boutique roaster called Goat Candy. The house blend for Pollen 185 is called Grass Roots and has beans from Colombia, Guatemala and Kenya. It is served with a symmetrical tulip for the latte art and I can taste a dark fruit flavour from the Kenya beans but the Colombian beans definitely bring nutty undertones to enjoy. The flavour is well-rounded and goes well with the local organic milk from Paris Creek. I truly enjoy my experience at this Hyde Park cafe and the people who live nearby might not realise how spoiled they are. Pollen 185 King William Road, Hyde Park facebook.com/Pollen185
