Australians who love music you are officially on notice: mark this Saturday morning on your calendars and head for the Adelaide Hills in droves to hear the world’s most sought after contemporary vocal ensemble singing The Ascendant, by your gifted and (in his country of birth at least) scandalously unsung, compatriot, Wally Gunn. Three of his humble but utterly euphoric settings of poems by NZ/Melbourne writer Maria Zajkowski appeared on the group’s Grammy nominated album Render in 2015, but here they will perform the full cycle of six.
Also on the program are works by Ted Hearn (famous for his Katrina Ballads, passionately angry settings of verbatim texts, including that of Kanye West, relating to the hurricane’s aftermath) and their signature piece, the mind-blowing Partita for 8 Voices, which won composer and founding member Caroline Shaw a Pulitzer and changed her life.
