The end credits for At the Movies are set to roll later this year, as Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton’s 28-year partnership as film critic hosts will wrap on Tuesday, December 9. 2014 marks a decade of the pair on ABC screens. In 2004, the migrated from SBS’ The Movie Show, which they’d hosted for 18 years previous after reluctant producer Pomeranz knocked back a whiskey and agreed to appear on camera alongside Stratton. Since then, they’ve earned a rightful place in the hearts of Australian cinema-goers, and enjoy an envied reputation internationally. David states in a press release that, “After 28 years reviewing films on television with Margaret, 10 of them at the ABC, I feel it’s time to go. We’ve had a wonderful time, thanks to very supportive and encouraging audiences, throughout that period.” He cites turning 75 last week as a primary reason for stepping out of the limelight. “I look forward to less pressure and more opportunities to enjoy the movies I love,” he says. In a rare moment of agreeance, Margaret adds, “It’s time to go from the small screen after a great innings, thanks to all our viewers and the fabulous teams we’ve worked with over the years. “My gratitude goes to David who gave me credibility just by being prepared to sit by me and discuss film when I am just a film enthusiast, not the great walking encyclopaedia of film that he is. He’s a grand person, a most generous, decent man, even if a little stubborn at times,” she says. On a first name basis with the entire country, their contribution to the Australian film and TV industries is undeniable. Leaving shoes too large to fill (and earrings too jangly to rival), #ourABC has decided to strike At the Movies when Margaret and David retire at the end of 2014. At the Movies screens on ABC TV every Tuesday at 9.30pm.
