Neighbourhood Watch has broken the State Theatre Company’s box office record with more than 10,000 people expected to see Miriam Margolyes star in State Theatre’s current production.
The Australian work (written by Lally Katz) is the first time a State Theatre production has grossed more than $400,000 and it breaks the previous State Theatre box office record set by Brief Encounter last year. Neighbourhood Watch’s star Miriam Margolyes has received much acclaim for her role as the brash and sharp-tongued 80-year-old Ana, her first Australian theatre role since she became an Australian citizen. State Theatre CEO Rob Brookman says that it’s wonderful to see State Theatre’s box office results going from strength to strength this year “following a sold-out season of The Seagull and a near sell-out of our season of The Long Way Home”. “It is especially exciting that this box office record has been set by a recent Australian work,” he explains in a press release. “We’re also anticipating a great result with our State Ed show Jesikah, which looks like it may be another sell-out show. We have also been delighted to see season subscriptions continue to grow in 2014 – with a 15 percent increase from 2013 to 2014 taking the total increase over the last two years up to 25 percent.” To meet the demand, State Theatre has added an extra Neighbourhood Watch performance on Saturday, May 24 at 2pm. statetheatrecompany.com.au
