The Adelaide Night Market will continue through autumn and into winter with the fortnightly market’s season extended until June.
The mix of hawker style food, artisan goods and live entertainment enjoyed on the North Terrace lawns was a thriving success. In the coming months, the Adelaide Night Market will remain as diverse as ever. “As the autumn chill sets in, people are encouraged to don their favourite winter coat and head out to the market’s food stalls where the heat will be turned up with offerings of hearty seasonal dishes and warming brews,” says Rebecca Draysey of the Adelaide City Council. With the changing weather, expect to see a shift in the selection of world cuisines with Malaysian, Spanish and Argentinian food on offer. The North Terrace location is part of the market’s appeal and sets it apart from other markets in the city. “It holds strong appeal for young families as the location of the event provides a safe and relaxed environment for children,” says Draysey. The market is one of 70 community generated ideas and activities that Splash Adelaide have supported over the last year. The Night Market’s extended run represents just how much Adelaide has taken to events such as Fork on the Road and the Imagination Playground. One initiative that was embraced during the Fringe season was The Depot, a venue featuring local food, live music and thrift clothing at the old bus station on Franklin Street. “The Depot supported Splash’s goal to provide a platform for people in the community to trial or pilot new initiatives. The venue showed people how, with a little creativity, previously underutilised spaces can indeed be transformed,” says Draysey. Unfortunately The Depot’s extended season was cut short this month due to a “number of factors” according to The Depot’s organisers on Facebook but they hope the venue will be back for the 2014 festival season.
