Neneh Cherry to bring 'Broken Politics' to Australia

From seminal jams like Buffalo Stance to the evergreen Youssou N’Dour duet 7 Seconds, Cherry’s musical influence is immense. Now Cherry returns with a new album charged by the challenges and frustrations of today’s political climate, bluntly titled Broken Politics.

To create the album Cherry worked once again with influential producer Four Tet, the pair’s second collaboration after her 2014 comeback album Blank Project. “I’m very shy about taking on big themes with the airs that I’ve got a solution—who has the f*cking solutions?” Cherry says of the album. “I like writing from a personal perspective, and the time we live in is so much about finding your own voice. People have been left feeling misheard, misunderstood, and disillusioned. What the fuck can I do?

“Maybe politics starts in your bedroom, or your house—a form of activism, and a responsibility. The album is about all of those things: feeling broken, disappointed, and sad, but having perseverance. It’s a fight against the extinction of free thought and spirit.”

The January tour will see Cherry perform at both Sydney Festival and Tasmania’s MONA FOMA, along with an appearance at the Governor Hindmarsh on Friday January 18. Only Cherry’s second Australian tour, the first in 2015 saw her visit South Australia for WOMADelaide.
