The longtime musical project of Community star Donald Glover, in recent years Childish Gambino has pivoted from playful rap to funk on 2016’s Awaken, My Love!, before winning the four Grammys with last year’s incendiary state of the union This Is America. In addition to his musical output, Glover starred as a young Lando Calrissian in Star Wars prequel Solo and continued to write, direct and star in drama-comedy series Atlanta, whose inventive second season Robbin’ Season aired on SBS last year.
Joining Glover on the Triple J-centric Spin Off lineup will be British rock groups Catfish and the Bottlemen and Wolf Alice, alongside Australian acts including Ball Park Music, Hockey Dad, Mallrat and Sydney group Ocean Alley, whose hit Confidence took out the #1 position in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100 countdown (and also bears a striking resemblance to Childish Gambino’s hit Redbone, it must be said). A South Australian artist will also be selected to open the festival through Triple J’s Unearthed website.
Childish Gambino last appeared in Adelaide as part of the final Big Day Out lineup in 2013, and will return to Australia after a 2018 tour was aborted due to an injury.
