Tomorrow, the nation’s readers will be invigorated – it’s time to celebrate the shops that keep us up to our eyeballs in delicious stories, year in, year out. We’ve tracked down the places you can play on National Bookshop Day: Saturday, August 9.
Imprints Booksellers
107 Hindley St, Adelaide 9am – 5pm Satisfy your appetite for food as well as words, as Imprints is taking the “party” directive seriously. Complementary sparkling wine, cupcakes and other treats will be on offer. On the books side of things, they’ll be offering a few deals with any purchase over $10: enter the draw to win a book pack, or take home a copy of Cooking For Claudine (John Baxter) or Foal’s Bread (Gillian Mears).
Dillon’s Bookshop Norwood
160-166 The Parade, Norwood 8.30am – 5pm Known for its enormous children’s range, Dillon’s will be celebrating the release of Australia’s Top 50 kids’ books – as voted by readers. The list will be released tomorrow, and there’ll be balloons and giveaways to promote the party mood. Allen & Unwin has kindly donated a wide selection of books – Jodi Picoult and Charity Norman among the authors – if you want to get your mitts on something gratis.
Matilda Bookshop
8 Mt Barker Rd, Stirling 9am – 5pm The hills are alive with the sound of reading … The Stirling staple will be running a draw for one lucky customer to win a ridiculous stack of books, plus giving away titles from Allen & Unwin with every purchase. There’s a gift to go with each purchase of children’s books, too. After 2pm, see out the celebrations with a glass of bubbly from Deviation Road Winery.
Chapter Two Books
12 Mt Barker Road, Stirling 10am – 5pm Keeping the attraction in the Adelaide Hills is Chapter Two Books. Not far from Matilda, Chapter Two will be open and offering a table of bargains out the front for the intrepid explorer. As a quality second-hand store, there’s always something pre-loved and wonderful waiting to be read here.
O’Connell’s Bookshop
62 Hindley St, Adelaide 11am – 3.30pm A second-hand and antiquarian books store, O’Connell’s is stacked to the rafters with readable treasures. On Saturday, science-fiction fans will be in luck with 20% off the genre.
Mindfield Book Gallery
10 Coromandel Parade, Blackwood 11am – 3pm Kids again have the pick of the festivities, with Mindfield hosting a story session in the window of their shop. The Blackwood favourite will also be running raffles and giving away balloons.
Mostly Books
119 Belair Rd, Mitcham 9am – 5pm To coincide with the release of the Top 50 Kids’ Books list, Mostly Books will be hosting a writing workshop for young authors. This group, run by sales assistant Samuel (currently completing his Honours in Creative Writing), is for children aged 10-14 or 14-18. Samuel facilitates the sessions and runs exercises for the young writers, some of who have since entered and won short story competitions. While the session on Saturday is for children already involved in the group, others can come along and look in on the workshop.
