The festival, which runs from Wednesday, October 10 to Sunday, October 21, will feature 17 world premieres and 30 Australian premieres across its 12 days. With a theme of #youmustsee, 44 per cent of the films in the program are Australian while 22 per cent were created in South Australia.
The highlight international films include the Coen brothers’ latest The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Alfonso Cuaron’s Golden Lion-winning Roma, Julian Schnabel’s Vincent Van Gogh biopic At Eternity’s Gate and Robert Redford’s acting swansong The Old Man and the Gun. These join highlight local films The Nightingale from director Jennifer Kent and Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai, which will open the festival on Wednesday, October 10.
The Nightingale recently was announced as the Venice Film Festival Special Jury Prize winner while Hotel Mumbai, which stars Armie Hammer and Dev Patel alongside local Tilda Cobham-Hervey, recently had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and was called an “unlikely crowd-pleaser” in a four-star review from The Guardian.
Adelaide Film Festival artistic director and CEO Amanda Duthie says the program features the big winners from the Venice Film Festival alongside the “newest works from auteurs and big stars, and new and innovative experiences for our audience”.
“The festival will feature not only the world’s most anticipated films but will also provide a platform for local emerging filmmakers and, excitingly, 44 per cent of the films are directed by a woman showcasing a breadth of screen storytelling voices,” Duthie says in a release. “I am particularly proud of the ADL Film Fest FUND films including The Nightingale and Hotel Mumbai, which this week, have already proven their world-class standing.”
The Adelaide Review presents Marco Proserpio’s documentary The Man Who Stole Banksy as part of the festival. The Iggy Pop narrated film about one of Banksy’s artworks in Palestine is a story about clashing cultures and how art can be valued differently. It will screen at the GU Vmax on Saturday, October 13 at 12pm and Wednesday, October 17 at 5.15pm.
