Toast The Locals, a national online food and beverage marketplace that launched out of Adelaide in February 2019, is seeing a growing demand for its unique service.
Founder Angela Leske describes the site as a ‘one stop shop’ for a growing range of quality food and beverages, including alcohol, all made by small and artisanal producers.
“Each producer on Toast The Locals has their own online ‘shop’ where they can list their products for sale and tell their unique stories,” Leske explains.
“Most of the 65 small businesses who have already set up shop on Toast The locals are from around SA with many from country areas, including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Murraylands, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Fleurieu and the South East as well as the Adelaide Metro,” says Leske, noting that the emphasis on South Australian brands reflects the provenance of the company but doesn’t mean consumers won’t find brands from outside of the state on the site as well.
The site uses a ‘direct-ship’ model, meaning that shoppers purchase products directly from producers via Toast The Locals marketplace. Each producer receives the order and ships it directly to the customer’s door, cutting out double handling and keeping costs to a minimum for both the producers and the customers.
“Toast The Locals operates on a profit-sharing model, directing the majority of all proceeds made back to the businesses who make the products, ensuring they get more money back into their pockets than they would from a traditional wholesale/retail model,” Leske says.
One advantage of the Toast The Locals site is that shoppers can buy from more than one producer in a single transaction. “You can buy cheese from Woodside Cheese Wrights, Wines from La Linea and Barley Stacks, infused olive oils and traditional Italian biscotti from Back to Basics Traditions, and delicious ready-to-eat foods from Let Them Eat, all in one shopping purchase, saving not only money but time as well.”
With more than 400 products and many well-known brands, there is a wide range of home cooking, pantry staples and cellar stockers on Toast The Locals. “It’s like going to the supermarket, or really a boutique shopping precinct, but online. You can shop for your wines and spirits as well as for food,” explains Leske.
During the COVID-19 crisis, with so many small food and beverage companies losing all of their face to face business, Toast The Locals is providing an alternative, especially for those small producers who do not have an e-commerce retail presence.
“We have been working closely with these businesses to help them adapt to new ways of reaching consumers,” says Leske. “We have expanded our online shop to accommodate businesses with fresh and frozen products, and those with ‘ready to eat’ products who can offer home or office delivery.
Naked Blendz Smoothies can now be bought on Toast The Locals and delivered, frozen, across Adelaide. Let Them Eat has set up a shop on Toast The Locals to deliver vegetarian and vegan products and a farm from the South East is gearing up to take orders through Toast The Locals for home delivery of pasture-raised chickens and eggs to Adelaide twice a week.
“As a nimble start-up, we can change and adapt our online marketplace to accommodate the needs of small local producers, as well as customers who are desperate to find quality foods and beverages to feed themselves and their families.”
Leske is planning to rapidly evolve Toast The Local’s unique position as the online connection between so many small Australian producers and Australian homes. The company is set to announce more food and beverage delivery options across Adelaide shortly.
“When people shop on Toast The Locals, they are shopping directly with each producer. We believe there is a win-win in supporting local. Shoppers get great local produce delivered to their doors and in turn they are helping to support local businesses.”
