Wine Review: Deep Woods Estate's "Cracking" Cabernet

If you have kept an eye on wine show results over the past couple of years, you will be aware that Deep Woods Estate in Margaret River is consistently belting it out of the park and picking up gold medals and trophies left, right and centre.

deep-woods-estate-cabernet-sauvignon-wine-review-adelaide-reviewI was lucky enough to be judging at the 2016 Melbourne Wine Awards and saw this wine come through our judging panel and go all the way to win Australia’s most coveted wine show trophy, the Jimmy Watson. This wine is an absolute cracker. If you need further convincing, it nabbed the Max Schubert Trophy for the most outstanding red wine at this year’s Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

Winemaker Julian Langworthy crafts the wine from the Deep Wood Estate’s low yielding vines in the Yallingup region of Margaret River. It’s classic Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, all ripe, opulent fruit and gravelly tannins but there is a distinct contemporary shape to its form. There is light and space, a sense of brightness and precision to its flow and a purity of fruit that is a joy to behold.

Deep red/purple in the glass, the wine shows amazing aromatic lift with its perfumed notes flowing immediately from the glass. Hints of baking spice, violets, licorice, bay leaf, Cassis and perfectly judged French oak meld with lighter notes of cedar and tobacco
on the palate.

The wine’s weight in the mouth is pitch perfect, the tannins are fine and ripe and the finish is long and packed with flavour. Benchmark Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
