Wine Review: A Lazy Sunday Light Red from the Golden Child

This is a community service announcement: please do not be afraid of popping lighter red wines in the fridge to take the edge off them this summer.

golden-child-james-hamilton-wine-adelaide-review-2Considering our climate, we tend to drink red wine a little warm around this time of the year. A little chill to those reds that are lighter on the tannin does wonders for both the wine and the disposition of those emptying the bottle. Here is one such wine that is just ace with 30 minutes or so of chill time.

It was during a 2015 surf trip with his family to Portugal that winemaker James Hamilton decided to make wine under his own label from his family’s 1997-planted vineyard in Kuitpo in the Adelaide Hills.

The range is spot on, unabashedly sitting at the lo-fi, low-intervention end of the vinous spectrum and featuring an inherent drinkability that will win them many fans over the warmer months.

The Lazy Sunday is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah. Hand-picked and fermented with wild yeast, the Syrah component is 50 per cent whole bunch before pressing off early to old hogshead barrels. The Pinot Noir ferments are whole berry instead of whole bunch and left on skins as per normal.

It is a wine that is light and spacious with plenty of light flowing into its ripe, pure red and dark fruit core. Hints of spice, hoisin, Amaro herbs, jasmine and macerated summer berries jazz things up nicely.

It’s a pretty little thing, light on its feet with a sprightly gait across the palate. Smashability factor 10/10.
