Australia has made a substantial mark on the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, announced overnight in London. Melbourne’s crowning glory, Attica – already recognised with multiple three-hat accolades from The Age Good Food Guide and the Restaurant of the Year gong from Gourmet Traveller – has again been named the Best Restaurant in Australasia, and placed at #32 on the list. The position puts Attica ahead of world renowned venues such as Relae (Copenhagen, #45), Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée (Paris, #47) and Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns (New York, #49). While this is a dip from Attica’s position last year (#21), it’s still a meteoric rise from their 2010 entry to the list at #73. The Salt Cured Red Kangaroo with Bunya Bunya was selected as the choice dish. The judges notes praise the “sublime and captivating experience” of Ben Shewry’s modern Australian jewel. Attica: Salt Cured Red Kangaroo with Bunya Bunya While Attica has no more Australian peers in the top 50, the 51-100 list showcases some friends. Sydney’s Quay placed at #58 and Melbourne’s Brae at #87. Fellow Sydney establishment, Sepia, joined the ranks at #84, also won the individual award for One To Watch. The 2013 One To Watch was Cape Town’s The Test Kitchen, which this year placed at #28 in the list. The 2014 One To Watch, Saison, placed just ahead of Quay at #56 this year. Beyond the Australian achievements are the top-placers this year. With no small amount of controversy, Copenhagen’s Noma has been bumped from the top spot (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014) down to third in the world. At #2 is Modena, Italy’s Osteria Francescana. Reclaiming the crown as #1 in the world is the Catalan cuisine of El Celler de Can Roca (Girona, Spain). They also placed #1 in 2013. theworlds50best.com attica.com.au
