Marieka Hambledon, Duncan 2016
Hambledon studied Visual Arts at the University of South Australia in 2005, where she explored many different mediums, including glass art and photography. Her interest in art theory and history introduced her to Bauhaus theories and approach to design.
Hambledon describes her work as an amalgamation of her love of art, design and theatre, focusing on people and character. Her portraits aim to tell a story, manipulated through the use of her signature restricted colour palette.
Her philosophy is simple: “I want people to feel something when they look into the eyes of my portraits. I want them to feel that this portrait is alive and saying something, evoking an emotional or even political interpretation.”

MUSIC MATCH
Asaf Avidan – Different Pulses. He inspires me in the kitchen and in the studio. A perfect mood setter to begin a night.
WHY ARE ART AND FOOD INTERTWINED AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Art and food are both about expression. They can often be a way to express emotion, get in touch with our past and other things that evoke feeling within us. I also feel cooking brings people together, so does art. They are powerful tools that often bridge the gaps between our di fferences. africola.com.au facebook.com/mariekahambledonartist
