A Feast for the Senses at the Botanic Garden

Called A Feast for the Senses, the four-course meal with matched wines on Wednesday, March 14, is more than just a performance and dinner. It is a cross-discipline collaboration that will see Lloyd interact with the Botanic Gardens Restaurant chef to prepare and perform a matched food and music evening.

“The food will be interactive and will match not only Chris’s music but his energy and performance style. We have a few tricks up our sleeve,” Baker says.

“The food will be a lot of fun with a few surprises along the way. My connection with the gardens’ terroir is something I think Chris is most excited about, and lends to a lot of his inspiration for the pieces he will play.”

The genesis of this event was a dinner in London where concert pianist Lloyd — who founded the cross-disciplinary movement called ‘crossmodalism’ – performed while the guests enjoyed Baker’s food.

“Chris performed at last year’s South Australia Club dinner that we did in collaboration with the Hot 100 Wines [The Adelaide Review’s sister publication and event] at St Luke’s in London,” Baker says. “After a few wines post-dinner we thought it would be a bit of fun to bring what we did in London to Adelaide, his home town.”

Lloyd, who studied at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, has worked with chefs and food identities across the globe.

‘Crossmodalism was partly inspired by the incredible food culture we have in South Australia,” Lloyd says in a release. “Having lived for five years in Europe, and travelled around the world working with exceptional gastronomic practitioners, the quality of our produce, our wine, and our cafes and restaurants, is as good in South Australia as absolutely anywhere in the world. The Botanic Gardens Restaurant is the quintessential example of this quality, and the opportunity to collaborate (formed over a few wines in London last year) is fantastically exciting.”

For Baker, this collaboration gives him a chance to do something outside the norm.

“It’s not every day you wheel a grand piano into the middle of the dining room with an open licence to put on a show.”
