Thirteen South Australian restaurants make AFR’s Top 100 Restaurants

Australia’s Top Restaurants, which is voted by restaurateurs and chefs, sees Dan Hunter’s Brae go back-to-back as Australia’s best restaurant, beating New South Wales’ Ester and Saint Peter to the top spot. Saint Peter’s Josh Niland is the chef of the year.

Duncan Welgemoed’s Africola moves up 24 places to round out the top five, while Australia’s only 2018 World’s Top 50 placegetter, Attica, is number four. The top 10 is below. Africola is one of 13 South Australian restaurants to make the list, a far cry from the inaugural list of 2015 which saw only four SA eateries make the cut with Magill Estate our top placegetter that year at number 44.

Other South Australian restaurants to place this year include Gourmet Traveller’s number one restaurant Orana (23), Hentley Farm (41) and The Summertown Aristologist (48). South Australia has 13 restaurants on the list while New South Wales has 41, Victoria, 31, Tasmania, five, Queensland, four, Western Australia, four and the ACT, two.

The annual list, now in its fourth year, is directed by food identities Jill Dupleix and Terry Durack for the Australian Financial Review and is slightly different to a normal restaurant list where critics vote for the best. To find the top 100, the chefs and restaurateurs on a preliminary list of 500 Australian restaurants are asked to vote for their top 10.

The AFR’s list kickstarts the Australian season of foodie and restaurant lists, which will see The Australian’s Hot 50 and Gourmet Traveller’s Top 100, appear in the following months.
