Elliat Rich’s “sculptural vanity” work Place took out the biennial award over five other finalists and more than 100 entrants for the JamFactory- and Stylecraft-presented national furniture design competition.
Thanks to her win, Rich will receive $20,000 as well as an opportunity to undertake a residency at JamFactory’s Furniture Studio to develop new work for Stylecraft. Her winning prototype, Place, will be acquired by the Art Gallery of South Australia.
“I feel really humbled to be acknowledged by my peers within an industry I hold in such high regard and have an enormous respect for,” Rich says. “AFDA is an award with a huge amount of integrity and one that stands alone in the Australian design industry. I am really excited that this is just the beginning of such an amazing opportunity that will continue to roll out over the next few years and beyond.”
Along with boutique shoemaker James B Young, Rich launched Elbowrkshp in 2014, a studio retail space and workshop they share with other creatives in Alice Springs.
Place, along with the work of the other finalists (including South Australia’s James Howe), will be on display at JamFactory on Morphett Street until Sunday, July16. The works will then be exhibited in Stylecraft showrooms in Melbourne and Sydney.
